We specialize in English language courses that are designed to develop general and academic language skills. The University of Saskatchewan Language Centre (USLC) is nationally accredited by Languages Canada, Canada's national language education association.

Our courses will meet your needs to improve your English language skills and are offered three terms a year, targeting specific interest areas. Our current offered courses are designed for advanced academic students with a minimum of language level equivalence to CEFR-B2.

Courses

All courses are in-person, but will have hybrid accessibility in cases of illness, schedule conflict, and international access. Students must have a computer/laptop with a camera, microphone, and headphones. Program materials are included. Note that classes are not recorded.

In this course, students will advance their academic writing skills through writing advanced academic paragraphs, essays, and improving their grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and mechanics through structured writing sessions and instructor feedback.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
  • Use a variety of compound and complex sentence types.
  • Construct a multilevel essay outline after brainstorming ideas.
  • Write an academic essay including an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs with topic sentences and well-developed main ideas, and a conclusion.
  • Incorporate sources (quotes and paraphrases) into their writing using APA citation style.
  • Create grammatically correct adjective clauses and passive constructions.

This course is designed to help graduate students develop their academic writing skills, practice writing research proposals, and research papers, in addition to enhancing academic writing style, formal vocabulary, and mechanics while revising portfolio assignment.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 
  • Write a research paper with its components (introduction, literature review, procedures, methods, finding, discussion, data commentary)
  • Write different sentence patterns.
  • Paraphrase, summarize, cite, and reference in and outside academic texts.
  • Avoid academic plagiarism.

In this course, students will develop fluency and confidence in an advanced academic context through developing speaking/ listening skills and subskills. Students will improve vocabulary, functional language, and idiomatic expressions through various tasks and activities, such as group discussions and oral presentations.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 
  • Communicate with confidence in an academic setting.
  • Produce correct utterances with the appropriate stress, rhythm, and intonation.
  • Use common phrasal verbs in academic contexts.
  • Engage successfully in group discussions, including leading a group discussion.
  • Deliver effective academic oral presentation.

Tuition and fees

Tuition for all courses is due upon registration. Registration will not be confirmed without payment.

Refund Policy: The Language Centre will issue a refund, less a $50.00 CAD administrative fee, when notice of withdrawal is provided up to 7 days before the first class. NO REFUNDS are issued after that time. When courses are cancelled, students have the option to register for another course, transfer their payment to next term or to receive a full refund.
