Remembrance Day - November 11
Remembrance Day was first observed in the British Commonwealth November 11, 1919. Each year, on November 11 at the 11:00 am, several countries within the Commonwealth observe a moment of silence to remember the men and women who have served in the nation’s defence.
Starting in 1921, the poppy became a symbol of this day and money collected in the purchase of poppies supports programs and services for our veterans. You will notice many people wearing poppies. Poppies are meant to be worn on the left lapel of a coat or, as near to the heart as possible.
On this Remembrance Day, we encourage everyone to participate in a ceremony either virtually or, in-person. Information about ceremonies can be found here.
*Note: With November 11 falling on a Saturday this year (2023), the university will be closed on Friday, November 10, 2023 instead.
